What to do if your Heating Breaks Down

  • September 1, 2023

Your central heating system is a vital component of your home, providing warmth and comfort during the chilly months. However, there may come a time when it unexpectedly breaks down, leaving you in the cold. A malfunctioning gas central heating system can be inconvenient and uncomfortable, but knowing how to respond can make all the difference. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to take if your gas central heating system experiences a breakdown.

  1. Stay Calm and Safe The first and foremost rule when dealing with any heating system issue is to remain calm. Panic won’t solve the problem. Start by ensuring your safety: turn off the gas supply to the heating system and shut off the electricity to the boiler if it’s safe to do so. If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak, leave your home immediately, you should also open doors and windows to ventilate the home, don’t use any electrical switches, and call the gas emergency helpline.
  2. Check the Basics Sometimes, heating issues can be caused by simple problems. Before calling a professional, check the basics. Ensure that the thermostat is set to the desired temperature, the timer is functioning correctly, and the pilot light (if you have an older boiler) is lit. Sometimes, these issues are easily fixable and won’t require professional help.
  3. Restart the Boiler Try resetting your boiler by turning it off and on again after a brief pause. This can help clear minor glitches that may have caused the breakdown. If your boiler has a reset button, use it.
  4. Bleed Radiators If some radiators in your home aren’t heating up properly, there may be trapped air in the system. Bleeding your radiators can often resolve this issue. Use a radiator key to open the valve slightly, releasing any trapped air until water starts to flow consistently. Be sure to have a container or cloth handy to catch any water.
  5. Contact a Gas Safe Engineer If none of the above steps resolves the issue, it’s time to call in the professionals. Reach out to a Gas Safe registered engineer, who is qualified to work on gas appliances safely and legally. They will diagnose the problem and provide you with the best course of action.
  6. Preventative Maintenance To avoid future breakdowns, consider regular maintenance for your central heating system. An annual service by a Gas Safe engineer can identify and address potential issues before they become major problems, keeping your system running smoothly.
  7. Prepare for Emergencies Lastly, it’s always a good idea to have a plan in case of heating emergencies. Keep contact information for local heating engineers and the gas emergency helpline readily available. Additionally, consider having alternative heating sources like electric space heaters or blankets on hand for temporary comfort during a breakdown.
  8. Check the Meter Credit (If Applicable) If your gas central heating system operates on a prepayment meter, it’s crucial to verify that there is sufficient credit available. A lack of credit can lead to the heating system shutting down. Check the meter display to ensure it shows a positive balance. If the credit is running low, top it up as needed through your meter’s designated method, whether it’s online, at a pay point, or via a mobile app. Regularly monitoring and maintaining the credit on your meter can help prevent sudden disruptions to your heating.
In conclusion, a gas central heating breakdown can be inconvenient, but by staying calm, checking the basics, and seeking professional help when needed, you can minimize the disruption to your home and ensure a swift return to warmth and comfort. Regular maintenance and preparedness are key to preventing future breakdowns, so your heating system can continue to serve you reliably.
